Sandy Praeger, Kansas Commissioner of Insurance, will speak at the Iola Rotary Club on “Impact of Health Care Reform on Small Businesses and Medicaid” at noon Thursday at the New Greenery Restaurant, 1303 N. State St. The talk is open to the public.
Club President John Brocker advised those interested in hearing Praeger speak to arrive at about 12:20 p.m. The club’s business meeting should have concluded by then, he said.
Praeger has studied recent complex health care reform legislation and has spoken about it across the state.
Her office is responsible for regulating all insurance sold in Kansas and overseeing the nearly 1,700 insurance companies and 90,000 insurance agents licensed to do business in the state.
She serves as chair of the Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. She has been called upon to testify before Congress on health reform.
Praeger was elected as insurance commissioner in 2002 after serving in the Legislature and was re-elected in 2006.
She has twice received the American Medical Association’s Dr. Nathan B. Davis Award, bestowed on individuals who have made a significant contribution to the public health through elected and career government service.
She lives in Lawrence with her husband, Dr. Mark Praeger. They have two married children and three grandchildren.
