A one-block stretch of Broadway Street, on the north side of McKinley Elementary School, will soon become one-way.
Iola commissioners were told Tuesday that police officers, after visiting with school officials, recommended the street run only from west to east.
Turning the street into a one-way corridor will make it possible to create a bus parking lane, explained Mike Ford, community resource officer with the Iola Police Department.
Having a bus lane makes it legal for buses to load and unload children without having their stop arms extended, forcing other motorists to wait, Ford explained.
“We wouldn’t have enough room for the bus lane if it’s a two-way street,” Ford said.
Similar one-way corridors have been created for streets near Jefferson and Lincoln elementary schools as well as Iola Middle School.
Commissioners noted the decision for such traffic rules are set by local law enforcement, not the commission.
Still, commissioners favored the change.
