Their ensembles complemented the color of their eyes and frequently the color of their fur.
Yes, the Allen County Fair’s best dressed pet show exhibited well thought out attires.
There were dogs, a kitten, goats and even a hermit crab that showed up Tuesday morning.
A hermit crab has not been the strangest animal to show up in the past, fair board member Becky Robb said. In previous years people have exhibited snakes, horses, hedgehogs and other non-conventional animals.
There were about 10 animals in all.
“Usually we have at least 20 dogs,” Robb said.
Robb doesn’t know why the turnout was low, but she suspects it might have something to do with the heat, or the early time.
This is the second year the contest began at 10 a.m., which fair organizers do because it is too hot for the animals and their owners later in the afternoon.
There were three groups judged during the show, the first two groups were dogs and then there was a miscellaneous group with two goats, a kitten and the hermit crab.
The goats, who were hand-raised, tied for first. Stony was dressed up like a clown and Sunny as a cowboy.
The judges scored on creativity, behavior of the child and animal, how long it took to make the outfit and originality.
The winners were able to pick out a stuffed animal of their choice as their prize, and the little kids, even if just a spectator, were given the opportunity to choose a small stuffed animal as well.
