Kim Peterson has been a part of the Iola City Council since January, having been appointed to the seat after it was vacated by Michael Middleton.

“I talked to a lot of people about it, and they noted it would only be for a year,” she said. “If I didn’t like it, I could just not run again. So I figured I’d give it a try.

“And I’ve liked it,” she noted. “I’ve felt like, since I’ve been doing it for this long, I should stick it out and try to keep learning. And it is a lot of learning.”

Peterson is one of four candidates up for consideration in Tuesday’s primary election for Iola’s Ward 3 voters.

She is joined on the ballot by Josiah D’Albini, Kyle King and Ashley Varner.

The top two vote-getters will advance to the November general election. Articles covering D’Albini’s and Varner’s candidacies were in Thursday’s Register. King’s profile appears elsewhere in today’s Register.

PETERSON has taken her desire to learn more about how the city operates to heart.

On top of the bi-monthly meetings, she will visit individually with City Administrator Sid Fleming or others in the community to get a better handle on certain topics.

She notes her silence on many discussions up to now is largely because she’s still taking in and processing information. “I don’t want to open my mouth at the wrong time,” she laughed.

“I see how people can get very passionate about certain things,” she said, “and I know I can’t please everybody.”

Peterson has worked for the past 19 years as school nurse for USD 257’s three elementary schools. Her husband, Larry, is chief financial officer at Allen County Regional Hospital.

Aside from her stint on the Council, she’s also been an active volunteer with the Allen County Animal Rescue Facility.

“I just felt like I needed to be doing something, giving back to the community,” she said.
