SAVONBURG — A grass fire kept firefighters occupied for several hours Monday as dried vegetation quickly succumbed to the rapidly moving flames.

The fire initially was reported along a pasture near the intersection of U.S. 59 and California Road, about one mile northwest of Savonburg.

The flames and embers spread, catching a nearby cornfield on fire.

At that time the fire began to spread rapidly, prompting a call for assistance from Elsmore and Savonburg, Allen County, Humboldt and LaHarpe rural volunteer fire departments.

Several farmers in the area also were on standby to help if needed, and members of the Allen County Emergency Response Team supplied water to firefighters battling the blaze in the searing heat with temperatures in the upper 90s.
