HAYS — Luke Wicoff and Kinsey Jelinek of Iola bowed out of the Sunflower Spelling Bee Saturday. Wicoff and Jelinek represented Allen County in the state bee.
Jelinek, a third-grader, misspelled “bagel.”
Wicoff, a seventh-grader, tripped up on “splice” in the second round of the contest that focused on vocabulary. In this round, students were given a word with two possible definitions, asking the students to choose the correct definition as well as spell the word.
The winner was Sukesh Kamesh of Kingman County who withstood 27 rounds over five hours. Kamesh will represent Kansas at the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C.
