Bryan Murphy announced today he would seek election as Allen County sheriff.

“I picked up (nomination) petitions Tuesday, 20 years to the day after I began in law enforcement,” said Murphy, 48, undersheriff the past three years.

“I wholeheartedly support Bryan for sheriff,” said Sheriff Tom Williams, who announced earlier he would not be a candidate for a third four-year term.

Compliments flowed both ways: Murphy said he considered himself fortunate to have worked with Williams since 2005, as a master deputy before being named undersheriff. Murphy was a deputy and undersheriff previous to that under Sheriff Ron Moore from 1994 to 2000.

He began his law enforcement career in Wyandotte County. He also worked in Douglas County and was a Humboldt police officer for two years.

In addition to being second in command on the Allen County force, Murphy is the department’s specialist in cases having to do with narcotics.

Murphy served four years on active duty with the Army, two years with a Patriot missile group in Germany and two years in military intelligence in the United States. He was a Army reservist for 10 years.

His wife, Angie Murphy, is Allen County’s 911 dispatch director.
