Searches for illegal drugs at Iola High School and Iola Middle School Wednesday came up clean, Iola Police Chief Jared Warner told the Register.
The search, including use of canine units capable of detecting illegal drugs, was done cooperatively with the Iola Police Department and USD 257.
Assisting with the effort were the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, as well as agencies from Montgomery County, Wilson County, Bourbon County and Neodesha, Warner said.
“Nothing of significance” was found, Warner said. “There were no drugs found.”
Iola High School Principal Stacey Fager said he was “very pleased” with the results.
Jack Koehn, USD 257 superintendent of schools, welcomed the cooperation between the school district and local law enforcement.
“We welcome these searches to ensure a safe learning environment for our students,” Koehn said.
The searches led to a flurry of other police activity later in the day elsewhere in Iola, including at the Allen Community College campus and Iola Walmart parking lot, Warner said.
However, reports from those activities were unavailable by press time, Warner said.
Those results were to be announced later today.

ON MONDAY, a drug dog that was walked through parking lots near Humboldt Middle and High schools gave indications that 14 vehicles may have at some point contained marijuana or another illegal drug.
A small amount of marijuana was found in one vehicle, Allen County Sheriff Bryan Murphy said.
The canine search was a proactive measure HHS Principal John Johnson requested, Murphy said. No search was done inside either school, but may occur later, he added.
