Dr. Craig Neuenswander, superintendent of USD 257 schools, resigned Monday evening effective June 30.
Neuenswander, in his 12th year at the district’s helm, will become director of finance for the Kansas Department of Education and work directly under Dale Dennis, deputy commissioner for finance. He will replace Brad Neuenswander, his cousin, who has been named new deputy commissioner for learning services with the state department.
“It is with deep regret that I will leave USD 257,” Neuenswander told the Register, echoing comments made by board members when they voted to accept his resignation. “We (he and wife Iris) have enjoyed our time here.”
Neuenswander’s responsibilities at the state level primarily will be to oversee distribution of funds to the 308 public school districts in Kansas.
“Also, I will spend much of my time answering calls from districts about funding, the same kind of calls I’ve made many times as superintendent here,” he said.
Board members scheduled a special meeting for 8 p.m. Dec. 15 to discuss how to go about finding and hiring a new superintendent.
