Brandon Callahan, 34, accused of murdering his mother, Lucretia, in their Iola home Tuesday, made his first appearance in court Friday.
Magistrate Judge Tod Davis confirmed Callahan’s $1 million bond and scheduled a status hearing for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Davis said he planned to appoint an attorney from the Southeast Kansas Public Defender’s Office to represent Callahan.
Callahan remains at the Allen County Jail, where he is expected to undergo a mental evaluation.
At the time of the alleged crime, Callahan was on probation from a pair of arrests in October 2015, the first for driving while intoxicated and criminal deprivation of property; the second for alleged lewd and lascivious behavior.
As part of a plea agreement, Callahan pleaded guilty to the drunken driving and a charge of interfering with law enforcement, and the lewd and lascivious behavior charge was dismissed. He was ordered last April to serve five days in jail, and placed on probation for a year.
In 2012, Callahan was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He entered a diversion agreement in 2013, and the charge was dismissed a year later.
In 2007, he was arrested twice in a two-month span, the first for possessing marijuana, the second for domestic battery.
In 2006, Callahan was arrested after stealing a vehicle in Lawrence and leading officers on a 130-mile chase into Missouri before he was apprehended.
