A second round of severe winter weather in eight days paralyzed the area with eight to 12 inches of snow, depending on who made the assessment.
All area schools were closed for today well before bedtime Tuesday evening. Many activities, from bingo games to social meetings to the Allen County Spelling Bee were canceled. The bee’s cancellation was its second on consecutive Wednesdays.
Iola plows began clearing thoroughfares Tuesday afternoon and workers were out all night, just as they were a week ago.
“We were doing pretty good until about 4 a.m. when another band of snow came through,” said Dan Leslie, Street and Alley Department supervisor, “but we’re dealing with it pretty well. We were lucky that there wasn’t more wind than there was. We had a little drifting on the north side of town, but not much elsewhere,” he said.
City Administrator Judy Brigham told Iola commissioners Monday night that they could be proud of the response and effort that city workers put forth.
