Moran celebrates harvest

MORAN — The annual Moran Days festival will celebrate the “Harvest Moon” Saturday and Sunday with a number of games, activities and other local traditions.
The events open bright and early Saturday, with a biscuits and gravy breakfast served by the Marmaton Valley High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter.
Food will be served from 7 a.m. until supplies are exhausted.
A book sale begins at 8 o’clock outside the Moran Public Library before a best-dressed pet contest and arts and crafts show open at 9 o’clock at the Moran City Park. In addition, Humboldt Helicopters will offer rides for $25 apiece to give passengers an aerial glimpse of Moran and surrounding areas.
Moran’s Larry Manes and Nelda Cuppy are the grand marshals for the 11 a.m. parade, including a special rendition of the national anthem by Kaysha Elmenhorst.
Free trolley rides will be depart from the park immediately following the parade. Others can enjoy lunch at the Moran Senior/Community Center.
A number of games get underway at the park after the parade ends, including a cake walk, bean bag toss and ring toss. Several inflatable attractions also will be set up.
Free pony rides will begin at noon, while Jim Taylor and Friends will serenade the park crowd at about 12:30 p.m.
A pie contest and other children’s activities start at 1 o’clock, followed by a salsa contest at 2.
A pedal pull at 2 o’clock leads up to the popular merchants drawing at 3, and a free bean feed at 4. Diners are asked to bring their own pots or table service.
A co-ed softball tournament will begin that evening, and a free night movie at the tennis court will show “Angels In the Outfield.” Spectators are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and snacks.
A three-person scramble golf tournament gets underway Sunday morning at Cedarbrook Golf Course. To register (cost is $75 per team) call (620) 365-2176.
The celebration culminates Sunday afternoon with the Miss Moran Queen Contest at the old Marmaton Valley High School gymnasium.
