Fall and winter are usually the seasons when people put on a few extra pounds. It’s cold, people eat heavier foods and stay indoors more. Thrive Allen County will help battle that tendency with its fourth annual Allen County Meltdown.

The meltdown is an eight-week, county wide program beginning Sept. 10. The goal is for participants to lose a few pounds, or better, form healthier lifestyles.

With a $10 registration fee, participants get a T-shirt and access to classes such as dancing, nutrition and circuit training.

Incentives are offered for participants who stick with the program.

Planning is still in progress for the healthy living program. Damaris Kunkler is its director. Right now, her main focus is developing a website that will give participants the opportunity to track not only their own goals and progress but also all of Allen County.

Any personal information logged in is private.

“No one else will be able to see your weight or hours of activity, but it will take all the information people log in and calculate for Allen County as a whole,” Kunkler said.

The website will have helpful links participants can visit, such as a calorie counter, healthy recipes and health tips.

The website is a helpful tool to trace individual progress, but not the answer.

“The answer will come when you are weighed at the end of the program,” Kunkler said.

For those without Internet, the Thrive office will offer a weigh-in station and Thrive members will record weight and minutes of exercise.

REGISTRATION for the program will be Sept. 10 -14.

“Though we are having certain days where people can register, we will have open enrollment throughout the program,” Kunkler said. “We will not turn anyone away.”

Elsmore and Moran residents can register at the festivals, Elsmore Days and Moran Days.

Booths will be set up where people can register and get measured.

At registration there will be a weigh in and a waist measurement, both are optional, but a good way to keep track of progress.
