About 200 Allen Countians signed on for the SEK Meltdown Saturday, pushing the total for four of the six counties involved to more than 400.
When figures arrive from Crawford County today, the number likely will be well above 500, said David Toland, Thrive Allen County executive director. Totals elsewhere are 100 in Neosho County, 90 in Wilson and 20 in Bourbon. Sign-up in Woodson County will be Saturday.
Thrive is sponsor of the six-county six-week effort to encourage participants to adopt healthier lifestyles. Exercise, diet and education are parts of the program, directed by Sunny Shreeve, Thrive administrative assistant.
“We’re thrilled by the turnout across southeast Kansas in our first regional meltdown,” Toland said. “The two Allen County meltdowns were great successes, too, and we’re not surprised to see that what we’ve created in this county has been enthusiastically embraced by our neighbors.
“Allen Countians should be proud that we’ve set a positive example of healthy living that the rest of the region is beginning to follow,” he added.
Health benefits were immediate for three people, whose blood pressures were so high during sign-up that they were directed to see their doctors immediately.
For those who missed Saturday sign-ups in Iola, Moran and Humboldt, they may register at the Thrive office in Iola, 12 W. Jackson Ave., through Friday.
