Local youth crowned state fair champs

HUTCHINSON — Allen County 4-H’ers raked in some serious hardware at the Kansas State Fair.

Allen Countians Carly Dreher and siblings Jillian and Carson Keller have accounted for three grand champion entries, beating scores of other competitors from across the state.

Dreher’s 276-pound barrow was declared the State Fair Grand Champion market hog. The barrow, one of 294 market hog entries at the State Fair, was first named champion crossbred swine, and then went on to earn a $4,000 award sponsored by Dillon’s.

Carly is the daughter of Jerry and Cathy Dreher, Iola, and is a member of the City Slickers 4-H Club.

Jillian Keller had the Grand Champion Market Lamb. Her 142-pound wether, tops among the 335 entries, was first named the champion Hampshire and earned her a $4,000 prize from High Noon Feeds and High Call Outfitters.

Carson Keller had the Grand Supreme Breeding Ewe. HIs animal was first named the champion commercial breeding ewe and warranted a $500 prize from Ott Club Lambs and Willoughby Sales. There were 256 entries in the breeding ewe event.

The Kellers are the children of Mark and Gretchen Keller, Piqua. They, too, are City Slickers 4-H members.

The State Fair runs through Sunday.
