Paul Porter’s attempt to get his name taken off the ballot for the upcoming Iola City Council election was unsuccessful.

Porter said he filed for the Ward 1 seat, thinking it was going to be an empty seat.

Unbeknownst to Porter, Jon Wells, a former Iola mayor and councilman, filed for the seat, which represents the northwest quadrant of Iola, a few minutes after Porter did.

The deadline to have his name removed had passed in June, at the time of the filing deadline.

Porter hopes Iolans vote for Wells.

“Jon and I are on the same page,” Porter told the Register. “We’ve talked a couple of times, and I think we would really vote similarly. I am proud to support him.”

If elected, Porter said he would decline the seat.
