An Olathe Boy Scout with ties to Allen County plans to offer his three-part Eagle Scout project to Moran, Iola and surrounding communities.
Olathe East High School graduate, Dean M.D. Fry, is the son of the late Richard D. Fry, a former Iola native and Shirley Henderson-Fry, originally from the Elsmore-Moran area. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 201 from Hillcrest Christian Church, Overland Park.
The first step in his Eagle project is to build a retirement box where anyone can drop a flag that has frayed, faded or become tattered or just showing signs of age. The box will be permanently placed at the American Legion Post 385 in Moran, where his grandparents, Martin and Mary Henderson have been active members for many years. The Post has collected old and damaged flags throughout the years but has never had a proper box for ease of citizens to drop off at this location. Phase Two of the project is the collection of the retired flags. Dean will collect American Flags over the coming Memorial weekend holiday at three local cemeteries: Highland Cemetery where his father is interred, Moran Cemetery and Elsmore Cemetery. A large red retirement canister will be placed near the entrance of each of these cemeteries for your ease in dropping off your flags or disposing of flags that were placed on grave markers. The canisters will be picked up late Monday evening. Phase Three of the project will be the retirement ceremony tentatively scheduled to be held on June 14, Flag Day, in Overland Park with his Troop.
Deans future plans are to attend Johnson County Community College and transfer to Emporia State University where he will pursue degrees in art education-therapy and psychology.
