The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are estimated at 1 in 292,201,338.

The chances of winning Saturday’s Iola Rotary Grocery Grab at G&W Foods are considerably higher.

Six finalists have been announced for a chance at the five-minute shopping spree: Cassie Cooper, Jeff Cleaver, Mark Larson, Sean Clay, Humanity House and the Pregnancy Resource Center.

A drawing will be held Saturday morning to determine who gets to partake in the shopping spree, although all six are guaranteed at least a $25 gift certificate.

“Everybody will come away with something,” noted Daniel Gile, store manager at Iola’s G&W branch.

In fact, even those whose names weren’t selected as finalists come away with a $5 rebate on their shopping trip to G&W — enough to cover the $5 entry fee.

“That’s what makes it so fun,” Gile said. “Nobody is out anything to take part.”

The rules of the shopping spree are simple.

The participant has unfettered access to any of the grocery departments, but is limited to one minute in the meat department, and cannot select more than two of any specific brands of meats.

Other than that, it’s a matter of strategically loading as many shopping carts as  possible and returning to the starting line before the five minutes expire.

In the four previous Grocery Grabs, winners walked away with at least $1,100 in food — a hefty boon with today’s rising food costs, Gile noted.

“It’s a neat little fundraiser, and everyone has fun,” Gile said. “It’s a good deal for everyone.”

The tab is paid by the Rotary Club, which has sold 779 of the $5 entry tickets. The tickets also serve as $5 coupons for any purchase of $50 or more at G&W.

The drawing is at 8:45 Saturday morning. The shopping spree commences immediately afterward.
