Paint therapy and a fall sports preview are among the programs offered by Iola Public Library in August.
The month kicks off with the Intrepid Reader book discussion program at 2 p.m. Thursday.
The book selection is Educated by Tara Westover. Born to Mormon fundamentalist parents living off-grid in the mountains of Idaho, the author of this memoir first set foot in a classroom at age 17. Today, with a PhD from Cambridge, she describes the grief of severed ties and her struggle for self-invention. In doing so, she gets at the heart of what education offers: the ability to see life with new eyes and the will to change it.
Some down time and fun are offered at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at Paint Therapy Night. Attendees will paint wish flowers step by step, while enjoying the company and chatting. They will take home their artwork at the end of the evening. Beverages and light snacks will be provided. Pre-registration and a fee of $10 are required by Aug. 6. The class is limited to 24 people.
Aug. 14 brings an overview of the New Community Health Center at 7 p.m. With the doors just opened on Iolas new clinic building for the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas, Dr. Brian Wolfe, director, and some of his health-care pros will tell all about it and answer questions. Attendees will learn about the new facility, the latest technology, and improved health services.
What can Mustang fans expect this fall? Get an early glimpse at Fall Sports Preview at 7 p.m. Aug. 16. Iola High School coaches for football, volleyball, cross country and perhaps other sports will give the inside scoop and answer questions.
The August Pinterest Party is at 6 p.m. Aug. 20. Participants will be making solar outdoor lights for porch or patio. The class is limited to 25 people. Pre-registration and a fee of $3 are required by Aug. 17.
