INDEPENDENCE — Iola High’s tennis team continued its steady improvement this season on Thursday when the Fillies landed a top-three finish in Independence.

The Fillies went 8-8 on the day which put them behind 12-4 Chanute and 11-5 Independence.

Number one singles player Allie Utley stumbled early in an 8-2 loss to Fort Scott before going go to win her final three matches, earning her a first-place finish.

It didn’t come easily, either. Utley had to battle through tie-break points in both her second and third match of the day to earn the win.

She beat Chanute after a 7-5 tie-break and Independence after an 8-6 tie-break.

Utley rounded things out with an 8-1 win over Pittsburg.

The number one doubles team of Gabby Richards and Carlie Payne went 2-2, beating Fort Scott 8-3 and Pittsburg 8-0 and falling to Chanute 8-3 and Independence 8-5.

The number two doubles team of Kassy and Sidney Shelby also went 2-2. They beat Fort Scott 8-5 and Pittsburg 8-4 and lost to Chanute and Independence 8-1.

Number two singles player Jennifer Tidd went 1-3, getting her lone win versus Fort Scott 8-4 before losing to Chanute and Independence 8-0 and Pittsburg 8-2.

The Fillies will try to keep it going next Thursday in Chanute.
