Max and Candice Grundy have lived in Iola for two years.

And already, they take great pride in what they call “our town.”

California transplants, the Grundys are known for their recent purchase of Iola’s abandoned water tower, which they envision turning into an Airbnb.

Last week, Max, a commercial artist, attended an Iola council meeting where he suggested Iola adopt a flag, giving a dozen examples.

Even though he regarded his presentation a “flop,” he thinks the idea of a flag promoting Iola is worthwhile.

He’s also been commissioned by the Iola Chamber to paint four murals around town.

“We’re definitely glass half-full type of people,” Candice said.

And yet, trying to crack Iola’s egg has been a challenge.

“We’re viewed as outsiders. What do we know about Iola?” is a vibe they frequently sense, said Max.

MAX AND Candice say they “hit the lotto,” when they stumbled upon Iola.

Looking to escape southern California, the couple and their two children, Church, age 12, and Ace, age 10, moved here two years ago, after 16 years, beginning first in Los Angeles in 2005 and then a few years later in Riverside.
