If you’ve been thinking about buying a home but aren’t sure where to start, a free First-Time Home Buyers class might be just what you need. Hosted by Iola Crown Realty, the class will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Iola Crown Realty office at 102 E. Jackson Ave.
The class promises to be a quick, informative session — lasting less than an hour — packed with essential details for anyone considering buying their first home. Attendees will have the chance to learn about various loan options, including programs that require little to no down payment.
Amy Utley of Iola Crown Realty, notes that one of the biggest obstacles for first-time homebuyers is often coming up with a down payment. “Affordable housing can be a challenge in Iola,” Utley said. “But if you’re able to come up with a down payment, the cost is going to be much more manageable.”
Representatives from Landmark National Bank will also be on hand to provide insights into loan options and approval processes. “A first-time home buyer’s credit may not be 100%, but Landmark National Bank can explain what they need to improve their credit and how to get approved for a loan,” Utley added.
In addition to discussing loan options, attendees can ask questions about the real estate process. Jennifer Chester, realtor with Iola Crown Realty, will be available to answer questions about the housing market and the buying process. “Home buying may not be for everyone, but it’s a good idea to listen and see what the options are,” Utley said.
For the first 50 attendees, gift bags will be given out, and refreshments will be provided. The event is free and open to the public, and organizers are hopeful that this session will be just the first of many. “We want to host more of these classes in the future with a variety of different bankers,” Utley said. “Every bank offers different programs, so it’s great to have options.”
With Iola’s median property value at $85,500 in 2022 and homeownership rate at 58.8%, the class could be a valuable resource for those looking to step into the housing market. In February 2025, the median listing home price in Iola was $159,900, reflecting a 7% year-over-year increase.
For anyone who’s unsure whether homeownership is the right path, Utley says this event offers a no-pressure opportunity to gather the information needed to make an informed decision.
