Iola Public Library will offer several programs for adults during June.
Fred Kipp grew up in Piqua and went on to play professional and semi-pro baseball from 1950 to 1964. He is the last surviving person to play for both the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees. He recently wrote a book about his experiences. Fred Kipp of Piqua: The Last Yankee Dodger tells about his career. Hell also sign copies of his book, which are available to purchase at the program. The program is at 7 p.m. June 4.
Palm Weaving is at 5 p.m. June 5. Local artist Billy Ray Hayes demonstrates palm weaving while telling stories of his travels. Hayes learned the art of palm weaving in the Hawaiian Islands.
The Intrepid Readers Book Discussion at 2 p.m. June 7 will feature Letters of Pliny the Younger. Writings of this famous Roman senator provide slice-of-life views of first-century Rome the persecution of early Christians, ghost stories, family matters, house plans and historys only surviving eyewitness account of the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius.
In honor of Fathers Day, dads (and/or moms) and their kids can come to Dogs & Dads at 3 p.m. June 9. There will be hot dogs, games, crafts, and prizes. Pre-registration and a $3 fee are required by June 1.
Two Tuesday Trivia programs will be held. Participants can get a team together or play solo. They will need a smart phone, laptop or tablet to connect and play. Those who do not have a device but still want to play should contact the library beforehand so they can have something set up for players to use.
Each program is free but registration is required, and there is a limit of 30 people at each. The first one, focusing on songs and lyrics, is on June 12. The second one, on June 26, focuses on jingles, ads, commercials and more. Both programs are at 6 p.m.
L.C. Lacy, drummer for The Exciters, the hottest dance band of southeast Kansas in the rockin Sixties, recalls the tunes and times of those glory days in Rockin the Sixties. The Iola band packed dance floors weekly at the Iola Armory, Piqua Knights of Columbus Hall, Moran American Legion and elsewhere. Bandmates were Cliff Sperry, Jon Boyer and Louie Kinman. The program is at 7 p.m. June 14.
Participants in the Pinterest Party at 6 p.m. June 18 will make a garden sparkler. The class is limited to 25 people. Pre-registration and fee of $3 are required by June 15.
The Adult Summer Reading Program theme this year is Libraries Rock! Registration begins June 4. The program runs through July 29. Those wishing to participate should register at the library. There will be eight weeks of books, puzzles, games, and fun. There will be a weekly drawing, and then a final drawing.
