BURLINGTON — A massive $2.5 billion military microchip operation in Coffey County was named the Kansas Semiconductor Manufacturing Consortium, according to the Coffey County Republican. It was formerly known as Silicon Prairie.
Coffey County commissioners authorized the consortium last week by signed a public-private partnership.
The agreement identifies the initial parties of KSMC.
Coffey County and Flint Hills Technical College are the public parties. The six private industries include EMP Shield, Inc.; PSU of Kentucky, LLC; Rusty Electronics, LLC; Secure Capacitors, LLC; Shady Ridge Manufacturing, LLC; and KPN Technology, Inc.
More industries are expected to be added on in the production of Gallium Nitride microchips for military purposes, according to The Republican.
Coffey County’s role includes providing $25 million in incentives to the project. Flint Hills Technical College will provide training and educational instruction for the project.
In other news, Southern Coffey County High School completed its 20th Veterans Honor Flight in 15 years, according to The Republican.
Sixteen adults and 48 student guardians escorted 47 veterans to visit Washington, D.C. where they visited war memorials and Arlington National Cemetery.
