Local music students compete at PSU events

PITTSBURG — Thirteen students from Mc-Collam Piano Studio participated Saturday in the Mid-America Music Festival at Pitts-burg State University. Those receiving a “I” rating on piano solos were Piper Weilert, Alexis Lee, Makayla Dunne, William Toland, Caroline Toland, Mariah Jelinek, Kale Godfrey, Jesse Taylor, Miah Shelby, Sidney Shelby, Jorja Murcko and Callie Murcko. Eli Dunne received a “II” (or “good” ratings) on a piano solo.

Several violin students of Betty Cunningham also participated in the music festival. Kinsey Jelinek, Miah Shelby, Rohan Springer and William and Caroline Toland, all of Iola, and Piper Weilert, Humboldt, earned I ratings.

Ursula Billings of Iola Middle School earned a I rating for vocal solo as well.

ON APRIL 14, Iola High School students competed at a regional music festival April 14 at Pittsburg State.

Elka Billings, Damiean Dryden, Elijah Fawson, Kaylin Klubek, Landen Nading and Rebecca Sprague played string solos. Billings, Fawson and Sprague earned I ratings and qualified for state. The others earned II ratings. Vocal soloists earning II ratings were Ashley Crane, Marta Iglesias-Gonzales, Kaitlynn Kilby, Erin Klubek, Kaylin Klubek, Karly McGuffin, Sierra Petty, Elaina Stiffler and Nicolas Zimmerman.

The IHS and IMS students were under the direction of Elizabeth Cunningham.
