HUMBOLDT — Bargain hunters in search of a cool drink can quench their thirst while aiding victims of the May 22 Joplin tornado Saturday.
A lemonade stand set up by area youngsters Taylor Knowles, Kaitlyn Gonzalez and Brooke and Bailee Berkenmeier will benefit Wrapped With Love, Hope and Peace, a Joplin-based charity dedicated to creating handmade afghans for those who have lost a home or loved one in the storm.
The girls agreed to set up the stand for their mothers, Sarah Berkenmeier, Sarah Gonzalez and Tesa Knowles, who are hosting their own garage sale. Both the lemonade and garage sale items will go on sale starting at 7 a.m. Saturday at 1020 Signor St. in Humboldt.
The girls plan to take their proceeds to a local fabric supplier to purchase yarn for the Wrapped With Love charity.
The lemonade stand serves multiple purposes, including an outlet to keep the youngsters busy while their mothers are otherwise occupied with the yard sale.
“It’s important to raise their awareness about helping,” Sarah Berkenmeier said. “We want them to help pick out the yarn and know what it’s for.”
The yarn will be sent to Wrapped With Love, Hope and Peace founder Karla Howard of Joplin.
“The storm continues to rage in our hearts and minds as Joplin residents begin the task of rebuilding their lives and community,” Howard said.
Howard is seeking donations of yarn of any size, color or style for the afghans.
Howard has set up a Wrapped With Love, Hope and Peace Facebook page to update supporters on her efforts.
