LAHARPE — A group of hearty volunteers will celebrate Saturday several new ways to remain active in LaHarpe.

A “Kick Start Your Heart” celebration begins at 9 a.m. at LaHarpe City Hall, where members of LaHarpe PRIDE and Thrive Allen County, as well as other volunteers, will be on hand to unveil a new fitness room.

The room is filled with a pair of recumbent bicycles, elliptical machines, resistance bands, free weights and other exercise devices.

The room will be open to the public soon at a price tag of $10 a month, with members also getting access to the adjoining gymnasium in what was the old LaHarpe Elementary School building.

Sign-up information will be available at Saturday’s event.

The fitness equipment was acquired through a $10,000 grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City, with additional donations through Thrive Allen County.

From there, the group will walk about 2 ½ blocks to the LaHarpe City Park to show off other new amenities, particularly the newly refurbished sand volleyball arena.

LaHarpe PRIDE members and other volunteers have spent the past several months preparing the area with proper water drainage and sand to make it a safe, fun environment for outdoor volleyball enthusiasts.

The freshly painted shelter house will be open for viewing at the park, while visitors also will get a glimpse of a new off-street walking path under development.

Breakfast and other snacks will be served.
