The Lady Cubs junior varsity volleyball team came up big on Saturday as they breezed by their competition, placing first in the Moran Tournament. Humboldt did not lose a set.
The domination started versus Uniontown as they grabbed sets one and two 15-13.
Madi Gean led the way offensively with five kills to go along with a co-team high four assists. Roni Bulk led the team behind the line with four aces. Emma Johnson did the dirty work defensively, leading her team with five digs.
While Uniontown kept it close in both sets, Northeast would not. The Lady Cubs wreaked havoc with their serving as Humboldt recorded 12 aces in their 15-9 and 15-5 victories.
It would be Johnson who did the most damage, recording eight aces in the two sets. Gean was at the top again offensively, putting away three kills. Jessica Myers led the team in digs with three.
Service continued to be on target as the Lady Cubs recorded 18 aces in their win versus Pleasanton (15-7, 15-2).
Johnson got up to double digits, recording 10 aces while Bulk followed behind with 8. Johnson also had her team’s only two digs.
It’s hard to think that Humboldt would find a way to be more dominant but in the second to last match versus Crest they did just that, crushing the Lady Lancers 15-1 and 15-2.
Johnson recorded 7 of the team’s 17 aces while Jailynn Goforth hammered in five of her own. Four different Lady Cubs recorded at least one dig and one kill in the set.
Humboldt finished off their march to first place with host Marmaton Valley and while the Lady Wildcats put up the best fight since the Lady Cubs’ opening match versus Uniontown, they still failed to push Humboldt to the brink.
The Lady Cubs grabbed the championship with set wins of 15-7 and 15-9 on the backs of a strong defensive effort as Humboldt recorded 14 digs.
Johnson and Myers led the effort, recording four digs a piece. Kirsten Roush, Gean and Bulk recorded three aces each.
“I was very pleased the way the girls played today, they stepped up their serving and really played well,” assistant coach Taylor Zartman said. “They set out with a goal to win and they achieved it.”
The C-team also competed in the tournament and went 2-2.
The team beat Crest (15-7, 15-5) and Marmaton Valley (15-13, 8-15, 16-14) while falling to Southern Coffey County (12-15, 5-15) and Central Heights (8-15, 11-15).
Up next, the junior varsity team will host Crest and Marmaton Valley Sept. 18.
