K-State Research and Extension’s “Kids Can Cook” summer classes culminated Wednesday in Moran, where, under the watchful eye of Southwind Extension nutrition educator Terri Kretzmeier, eight kids gathered at the Moran Community Center to compile the healthiest meal possible, using the safest techniques available. The course was staged in Iola and Humboldt in prior weeks. Above, Harlie Cook, left, and Addysin Drake attack the mise en place, which included all fresh ingredients — broccoli, zucchini, cucumber, rosemary, oregano, basil, sage, onion, chicken chunks, summer squash and more. The tiny sous chefs wrapped their gathered ingredients in a foil pouch and applied heat. The result: Cowboy Stew.
