A group of musicians are certain to jazz up the evening Saturday at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.

Cornet Chop Suey will bring its own tilt to traditional jazz, swing, blues and “big production” numbers to the Bowlus stage at 7 p.m.

Tickets are on sale for $15 — $13 for balcony seats — or $7.50 for student balcony tickets.

Cornet Chop Suey has enjoyed a rapid rise in popularity since the group’s first appearance at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee in 2001.

Named after a somewhat obscure Louis Armstrong composition, the seven-piece jazz band has traveled to dozens of shows across the country and in Canada and aboard cruises as far away as South America, with others planned for the Mediterranean and to Germany and Austria. Much of their musical style is influenced by such legends as “The Great Satchmo” Armstrong.

The band’s front line features Brian Casserly on trumpet, Tom Tucker on cornet, Jerry Epperson on reeds and Brett Stamps on trombone. Manning the rhythm section are Paul Reed on piano, Jay Hungerford on bass and John Gillick on drums.

With eight CDs under their belts, Cornet Chop Suey has recently released its ninth, “Mister Lucky,” available on the group’s website, www.cornetchopsuey.com. Another CD, “St. Louis Armstrong” features 13 Louis Armstrong compositions and songs.
