April is National Volunteer Month.
Locally, it is a time to honor and thank the people who work selflessly to make Allen County a better place. Iolan Lois Murray has volunteered for more than four years at Second Chance Thrift Store. She sets up displays, takes in donations, prices items and waits on customers. She also works to help maintain the store’s clean appearance. A cat owner herself, Murray likes the fact that the proceeds from the store help fund the Allen County Animal Rescue Facility and that the store provides a self-service dog wash area. She is also fond of the merchandise.
“I have just always liked flea markets and going to auctions,” she said.
Murray has been known to volunteer for Meals on Wheels and is currently a member of the Friends of the Library. Outside of work, her hobby is growing flowers, and her yard can be found overflowing with Impatiens. She has sung in the choir at St. John’s Catholic Church for more than 20 years.
Murray’s reason for volunteering is simple. There are things that need to be done by somebody, she said. Why not her?
