March will be a hectic month for Iola Middle School eighth-grader Clara Wicoff.
Wicoff, five-time defending county spelling champion, will travel to Great Bend March 17 to compete in the State Spelling Bee in the hopes of a repeat trip to the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.
Wicoff made it to nationals in 2009 and 2011.
Wicoff also learned this week she has qualified to represent IMS in the state level of the National Geographic Bee March 30 in Abilene.
Wicoff won a school geography bee and scored high enough on a written test to qualify for state. The state winner also travels to Washington in May to compete at the national level. The competition is sponsored by National Geographic magazine.
Wicoff is the daughter of Joel and Lisa Wicoff.
