Iola Public Library reopened the main portion of its building to patrons on Thursday morning.
An open house Wednesday evening drew more than 45 people who sampled cookies and received tours of the renovated facility. Another sneak preview Tuesday — for Friends of the Library, board members and former employees — drew an additional 40 people.
The overwhelming impression by all was that the library was larger — an illusion perhaps created by bright new signs hanging near ceiling level, for as Director Roger Carswell pointed out, “we haven’t gained a square foot of space.”
Space was, however, reconfigured to be more usable.
New round tables dot the landscape, including one topped with an in-progress jigsaw puzzle that patrons may try their hand at. Computer stations were relocated closer to the south wall and the young adult section of the library is now set apart from the main floor by shelving and made more attractive to users with sectional cushion seating and a bronze-color tin sign designed and crafted by Jason and Steve Robb.
In addition, a new display table, courtesy of Friends of the Library, shows off a seasonal selection of books.
The inviting new space wasted no time in attracting users. Patrons logged on to computers and checked out materials throughout the open house.
With the reopening of the main library, the west parking lot doors have been locked. Patrons should use the Madison Street entry.
Books on hold at the Flewharty-Powell Annex have been returned to the main library as well.
Regular winter hours also resumed Thursday. They are Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed Sundays and holidays.
