In its final act of business the now-defunct Iola Night Lions Club emptied its bank account Monday to the benefit of other local groups.
The Night Lions officially disbanded June 30 after 65 years of serving the Iola area, said Virginia Peters, club president. The club was responsible for a number of fundraisers to provide eyeglasses to the needy, sponsored several ball clubs through the years, assisted with such events as the Iola Recreation Department’s Shocktober celebration and played a major role in the annual livestock auction at the Allen County Fair.
Shortly after disbanding, the club donated financially to the Bowlus Fine Arts Center, Allen County 4-H, Fees Park in Gas, Hope Unlimited, Tri-Valley Developmental Services and the Lions Mobile Vision Screening Project, Peters said.
But there was still money left in the club’s bank account, Peters said, which prompted Monday’s disbursements.
Funds were sent to SAFE BASE, Fees Park and to each of the five Allen County 4-H clubs, Logan Pals, Prairie Rose, City Slickers, Prairie Dell and Square B.
Peters declined to say how much had been donated to each of the recipients.
At its zenith, the Night Lions had more than 30 members, Peters said. There were 10 active members when the club voted to disband, Peters said
