Gov. Laura Kelly’s inauguration festivities this week include a “Be The Hope” food and supply drive to benefit Hope Unlimited in Iola Saturday.
Hope Unlimited is an organization that aids victims of domestic and sexual violence, and is in regular need of basic foods and supplies.
The supplies are in greater need this year, Hope Unlimited director Dorothy Sparks said.
“We just didn’t get as many donations for the shelter this year at Christmas as we had in the past,” she said.
With that in mind, folks are asked to drive by the Hope Unlimited office at 406 N. Buckeye St. from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday with donations.
Those who show up will be treated to hot chocolate and cookies.
Among the most urgent needs are peanut butter and jelly, kid-friendly cereal, canned soup, flour, sugar and brown sugar, crackers, shredded and sliced cheese, eggs, Kleenex, coffee and coffee creamer, packaged snack foods, deodorant, Ziploc bags, shampoo, conditioner, dish soap and dishwasher tabs and silverware.
“Anything to help benefit the shelter is welcome,” Sparks said.
Cash donations also are ways needed to meet specific client necessities. Local restaurant gift cards for emergency meals are a welcome gift as well. Gas and phone cards are also on Hope Unlimited’s wish list.
Several other communities, organizations and counties are joining in the “Day of Service” projects to coincide with Kelly’s swearing-in for her second four-year term as Kansas governor this week.
