Iola High School seniors are recognized with local, state and national scholarships at an awards ceremony Wednesday evening.

Iola High School Principal Scott Crenshaw tried in vain Wednesday to keep a running tab on the dollar value the IHS Class of 2019 will receive in scholarships to attend college.

He was doing pretty well, he noted, until Jonathan Miller’s name came up.

Miller, who will attend Bowdoin College in the fall, will receive $70,000 in scholarships annually  over four years of his schooling in Maine.

Couple that with several other lucrative scholarships to his classmates — plus several in which dollar amounts weren’t announced — and Crenshaw lost count.

“Let’s just call it a gazillion dollars,” he joked.

Turns out, he wasn’t far off.

In very unofficial calculations, more than $415,000 worth of scholarships were awarded to Iola’s senior class, plus the others which weren’t tabulated, at Wednesday’s Senior Awards Night.

“Thank you for allowing us to partner with you,” Crenshaw told the seniors and their parents. “I couldn’t be more proud. It’s just a big celebration.”

A list of the awards follows:

McFadden Scholarships ($2,500 per semester for two years): Ashley Crane, Jack Eyster and Jennifer Tidd

Jim & Lily Knight Scholarship ($2,000 per semester for four years): Kassy Shelby

American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship: Katie Weide

Edward B. Zahn FFA Scholarship Trust  ($1,250 renewable each year): Jack Eyster and Cole Regehr

National FFA Scholarships ($1,000): Jack Eyster and Kendra Sprague

America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leadership Award ($1,500): Jack Eyster
