Humboldt Council members gave 7-0 support (Councilwoman Sarah Lassman was absent) to a Nov. 5 referendum for a half-cent sales tax to support street improvements throughout town.
If passed, the increase would bump Humboldt local sales tax to 1.75 percent and make its overall tax 9.5 percent. A simple majority will decide the issue.
If successful, the 10-year tax increase would be added to retail purchases and services beginning April 1, 2020.
A survey of streets is being done this summer by BG Consultants, Manhattan. The results will go far in deciding where and how the tax revenue would be spent.
Damaris Kunkler, community engagement director of A Bolder Humboldt, said the revival of the Humboldt Water Wars would be Aug. 10, including a parade around the downtown square. Volunteer firefighters will use their massive hoses to spray participants in the competition.
AT 7 p.m. Sunday The Princess Bride will be the feature for the second Movie Night on the Square. The first showing attracted about 300 spectators.
Open mic music is a feature each Saturday evening on the square. The third Craft Day, sponsored by Humboldt Pride, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 20.
PLANS TO reopen Moons grocery, with details still shrouded in secrecy, has been pushed back until after Jan. 1 so those financially involved may apply for a USDA Rural Energy Assistance Program grant to update refrigeration and lighting.
Council members will meet again in special session July 22 to consider the 2020 budget and hear a sewer project update.
