HUMBOLDT Sparks of creativity flew as students from Krissy Cooks and Helen Boyds second-grade classes at Humboldt Elementary School worked alongside Humboldt High School students preparing for their upcoming Spanish Market.
The event, scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday in the tornado shelter of Humboldt Elementary School, is open to the public and will feature a variety of Hispanic products.
Students will sell their creations with each item costing less than $1. Proceeds will be donated to Allen County Animal Rescue Facility (ACARF) and the SEK Down Syndrome Society, organizations the youngsters chose.
The market will feature offerings from a Roca de Mascota (pet rock market), Mercado de la Pulsera (bracelet market), Mercado de flores (flower market), Mercado de Brillo de Labios (lip gloss market), Pescaderia (fish market), Mercado de Lapices (crayon market), and a Panaderia (bakery).
I thought that having some kind of store would give them a real-world experience, while learning about other countries teaches them about geography, Cook said. Weve even been learning how to speak a few Spanish words and phrases. This project covers so many standards and the students love it.
Students from Humboldt High Schools journalism classes helped the second graders create posters advertising the market, and two students from the second-grade classes helped write a press release. In addition to the posters and press release, seniors from high school instructor Eric Carlsons Economics class visited the second-grade classes to help make origami fish.
I believe that when students make connections with other staff and students, their attitude about school improves, Cook said. Students especially love building relationships with older kids. But her favorite part of such an enriching project? Donating the money.
This is the third year that Cooks and Boyds second grade classes have hosted a market. Last year, the second-grade class hosted an Italian Market and raised just shy of $500.
