Humboldt High journalists finish on top at state

LAWRENCE — Humboldt High School students added to their school’s storied journalistic legacy Saturday, by winning their 22nd state sweepstakes championship at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association’s state competition. The event, for Class 3A schools, was hosted by the University of Kansas. Class 4A schools also had their state competition in Lawrence.

The latest championship is the eighth in a row, and 10th out of the past 11 years, for Humboldt High School.

The group continues to have the most overall and consecutive state journalism championships than any other high school in the state.

Humboldt journalists entered 37 entries in the 3A/4A competition and placed with 22 of them. The team earned 44 points in the 3A division. In second place for 3A was Sterling with 18 points. The next closest 4A high school was Hays with 37 points.

Humboldt’s students are advised by instructor Kim Isbell.

Humboldt students competing were:

— Sophomore Taylor Beeman, third place in Photo Illustration.

— Freshman Jailynn Goforth, honorable mention in Feature Writing.

— Sophomore Hailey Hammer, honorable mention in Yearbook Sports Writing.

— Senior Chassis Hoepker, honorable mention in Advertising Design.

— Senior Sydney Houk, honorable mention in Yearbook Copy Writing and Yearbook Layout.

— Sophomore Alayna Johnson, first place in Yearbook Layout.

— Sophomore Emma Johnson, honorable mention in Infographic Design.

— Junior Hannah Krone, honorable mention in Editorial Cartoon.

— Senior Hesston Murrow, honorable mention in Sports Writing.

— Senior Elizabeth Myers, second place in News Writing.

— Junior Victoria White, first place in Academics Photography.
