Donita Garner and Michelle Meiwes, long-time staff members for Hope Unlimited, explained Friday what the non-profit organization offers the community. THE COMMERCIAL speaker was Iola Office Supply employee Hannah Barclay. The store opened in 1992 in Iola. It covers a 45-mile radius of service for customers. Not only do they sell office supplies but they also sell breakroom supplies, candles, candies and fudge. Barclay said the staff can order a special item for customers as well.
Hope Unlimited is a community-based organization operated by staff and trained volunteers who support victims of family violence and sexual assault.
Speaking at Friday’s See, Hear Iola session, Gardner said Hope Unlimited services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. They provide emergency shelter, crisis intervention, outreach services, child visitation center and a child advocacy center.
“We are first responders to a domestic violence call or we are called once a scene is cleared,” she said. “We try to provide safety for all victims.”
Hope Unlimited was founded in 1984 and has served many in southeast Kansas. In the last two years Hope Unlimited has provided shelter to 145 women and children and taken 1,114 crisis calls.
The group also deals with sexual assault advocacy and are called to the hospital to help a victim. They have support referrals, mental health aid, they give a helping hand.
“We help them navigate through the complex system,” she said.
Meiwes noted the national media has shined a brighter spotlight on domestic violence as well. The National Football League has been in the headlines for such cases. This attention will hopefully bring more awareness, Meiwes said.
There are six full-time employees at the shelter but they are always looking for volunteers, for helping sort donated clothing or helping children during visits.
The organization receives county funds but is primarily supported by state and federal grants.
Hope Unlimited will have its annual fundraiser at 6 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Knights of Columbus in Piqua. There will be a wine tasting, treats and a silent auction.
New to the fundraising agenda this year is a 30/30 campaign. To celebrate its 30 years, the organization is asking for the community members to donate $30.
