An idea is like a seed. To take root, it needs the proper resources for it to flourish. LAST year the ACCF raised $145,000 at the Day of Giving, a day when area non-profits gathered to raise funds. This year the name has changed to Allen County Gives and will go from May 2 to May 8.
A local organization is willing to help such “seeds” take hold.
Allen County residents with an idea for improving the community can receive anywhere from $30 to $30,000 from SEED, a new fund of the Allen County Community Foundation.
The source of funding is being kept secret.
Susan Michael, executive director of the foundation, said a group of anonymous donors approached her with the idea and asked the foundation to help make it happen.
“The group has a soft spot for Allen County and they want to share what they have been given,” Michael said.
The application process is simple and asks only three questions: Who you are, how much you need and for what purpose.
The purpose, again, must be to make the county a better place to live.
Applicants can pick up a form at ACCF at 202 S. State St. in Iola or downloaded from www.givingmakesadifference.org. The deadline is May 1.
The possibilities are endless, Michael said, including the desire to resurrect a local event or to renovate a community treasure.
“We’ve received a good variety of applications already,” Michael said. “We’ve had things for the food pantry and ideas for the courthouse lawn.”
There is no age limit for applicants, including youths. Michael said she would love to see a group of kids get together and form a plan.
Applicants must be a non-profit, but if an applicant is not, ACCF can help pair them with a non-profit willing to help with their idea.
Michael said she hopes other community members will be encouraged to start a similar fund for future projects.
“This SEED fund invites people in the community to donate money and share their passion,” Michael said. “It makes it very unique.”
The group will select recipients by June 1. The cap on funds is $30,000.
On May 2, a Saturday, non-profits will set up booths to share their information from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 15 W. Madison Ave. (the old Classy Attic).
Michael said the event is to raise as much money and awareness as possible for non-profits.
“Last year was a huge success and I hope to repeat the success,” Michael said.
