The stifling heat appears to have been a contributing factor in the death of an Iola man Tuesday, Sheriff Bryan Murphy said.

Michael R. Karr, 37, was at work Tuesday as a pulling unit operator in a rural Woodson County oil field, Murphy said, when he began to suffer physical distress.

“A coworker thought he was having issues with the heat, so he left to get help,” Murphy said.

By the time the coworker returned, Karr had collapsed.

Crews were unable to revive Karr, Murphy said.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch through Sunday.
