Iola artist Gary Hawk, as much a living legend as there may ever be in these parts, will be honored at a reception Tuesday at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.
The occasion is a weeklong Bowlus exhibit of Hawk’s artwork in the Mary L. Martin Gallery.
The exhibit will remain open through this weekend’s annual Buster Keaton Celebration.
The reception runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Doors open at 5:45.
Hawk’s work has received international acclaim since he devoted his full attention to his work in the 1970s, inlcuding being displayed at the Kansas Governor’s Mansion in Cedar Crest, on a Christmas ornament in the White House, in the Reagan Library in Washington, D.C., on the cover of Kansas Magazine and through the advertising and marketing of numerous companies’ packaging and retail items. He also designed boats for the old IMP boat plant when it was open in Iola. Prior to that, he designed Hallmark cards.
His most famous piece, most would agree, is a print of Milburn Stone, who portrayed Doc on the classic western television series  “Gunsmoke.”
