Happy Hearts FCE members agreed to provide a food basket for a family in need and participate in the Adopt-A-Child program for Christmas when they met recently at Iola’s Riverside Park.

Hostess Terri Kretzmeier discussed “putting the pieces together” for her lesson.

She asked the others to consider what they’d do if chosen to lead a local group.

Progress depends on action, she noted, not mere intention.

A leader and members benefit most when there is a balance between accomplishing tasks and building relationships, Kretzmeier said. Both are necessary for a productive group. An effective group must communicate well in order to prevent ill feelings and make plans clear to ensure everyone’s commitment. Take the time to understand one another’s point of view in order to make the best decisions.

Encourage all to participate, share ideas and provide information. Discuss problems in ways that are not accusatory. Look for connections between one another’s ideas. Point out similarities and stick to an agenda.

Avoid criticizing ideas, lengthy commentary that takes time from others or speaking only to a few members, she said.

Early stages of a group may include anxiety, Kretzmeier said, which makes it vital to get acquainted and understand goals. The second stage is where the fun and excitement begin, a time of reassessing goals and exploring options. Thirdly, is a time of cohesion, where members begin to think as a group.

The fourth stage is of closure and completion. The group is responsible for implementing programs; the leaders delegating responsibilities.

The final stage is for regrouping and disbanding. It may be a time of sadness if a group dissolves, but it also serves an opportunity re-energize for new activities.

Aileen Wilson hosted the Dec. 8 meeting at her home.
