MEDICINE LODGE — July 21, 2018, will be a day Emma Jo, Gary and their son, Flint Rucker, will not soon forget.

Flint remembered arriving at his parents’ house late that afternoon with a watermelon he had purchased earlier and planned to share.

That act most likely saved the lives of his parents, who unbeknownst to Flint were in the middle of an armed robbery.

Emma Jo and Gary Rucker had been beaten and threatened by a man they did not know.

The Barber County Sheriff’s office says former Iolan Ora Mitchell Munger, 40, of Sedgwick County, faces one count of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated robbery, aggravated battery and aggravated kidnapping.

Bond for Munger has been set at $750,000.

The Ruckers reflected on the incident with Gyp Hill Premiere reporter Kevin Noland, who is sharing their story with the Register.

MUNGER appeared on the Ruckers’ property two hours before Flint arrived.

He met Emma Jo with a box he claimed contained jewelry and was being delivered on behalf of a man only identified as “Rick.”

Munger forced his way into the home. The box, Emma Jo noted, contained tape and zip ties.

When she looked back at the suspect, he had a pistol pointed at her head.

Munger ransacked the Ruckers’ home, assaulted both Gary and Emma Jo, and demanded money and guns.

FLINT arrived at his parents’ home, and noticed the strange vehicle in the driveway.

But that’s not uncommon, he admits. His parents frequently had visitors.

“I didn’t recognize the pickup, but didn’t think anything about that because they (Emma Jo and Gary) have a lot of friends,” Flint said. “They have been good to a lot of people and get a lot of people that come by to visit them.”
