Area golfers will be teeing up for a good cause this Saturday when the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program holds its 14th annual charity golf tournament at Allen County Country Club.
The tournament recognizes Fathers Day and the important role fathers play in raising children.
Aimee Daniels, who serves as the CASA director for the 31st Judicial District, said the group holds three charity events each year, but the golf tournament is by far the biggest one.
Sponsors met with CASA at the course on Wednesday afternoon.
We got involved with tournament sponsorship because its for a good cause, and they are great people to work with, Luke Smith of Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline said. Its always a fun event to take part in.
CASA recruits, trains and supports volunteer advocates who judges assign to children who have been abused or neglected and found by the courts to be in need of care. CASA is the childs voice in court.
The 31st Judicial District serves Allen, Neosho, Wilson and Woodson counties.
Event sponsors include Hofer & Hofer and Associates, Nelson Quarries, H&H Roofing and Restoration, Dr. Earl Walter, the Jim and Charlene Porter Family and Neosho Regional Medical Center. The tournament is underwritten by Ash Grove Cement and Community National Bank.
All funds remain within the district to help serve abused children here in our communities, Daniels said. More than half of the teams that compete in the tournament are from right here in Iola. We have golfers from all around compete in this tournament. We have golfers from Independence, which is where H&H Roofing is located. Community National Bank has always been a great sponsor for this event. They have branches in every community that we serve. Hofer & Hofer is from Humboldt. Mike Hofer has served as the honorary chairman of the event for several years.
This years tournament will be hosted by District Court Judge David Rogers.
The tournament still has a few openings for players. Interested golfers are asked to call Daniels at (620) 212-4255.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with players teeing off at 9.
Daniels said it will be a flighted tournament broken up into divisions by handicap so golfers who play the course on a daily basis do not have an advantage.
Coffee, doughnuts and trail mix will be provided by Prairie Fire Coffee before the tournament and Hofer & Hofer will provide BBQ for lunch.
