The tools of the trade may have been lost on the young girls, but that didn’t stop the Girl Scouts from wanting to sample the many accessories and clothes at Kelly Sigg’s Audacious Boutique.
Local Scouts Avriel Witchley, Lorie Carpenter, Olivia Kerr, Rebecca Wood and Taylor Johnson toured the local dress shop as part of the requirements needed to receive their business owner badge.
Sigg said the first thing to do when starting a business, or at least what she did, is to take out a notepad and start outlining.
“The first thing I wrote down on my notepad was insurance,” Sigg said. It is important to protect your business.
As the ideas of what to sell, how much to charge, the business’s location roll in, prospective owners start to realize how much is necessary to start a business.
Then there’s such things as utilities, advertising expenses and phone bills.
A name for the business is important as well.
Sigg chose the name Audacious Boutique from her favorite movie “Hope Floats” when Harry Connick Jr.’s character tells Sandra Bullock “You used to be so…audacious, bold. People would stop in the street and watch you walk…You think you’ve lost it, but I can still see it.”
“Audacious means bold and brave,” Sigg said. “For me to do this was bold and brave.”
Sigg said two of the hardest things in starting and maintaining a business are to constantly come up with fresh ideas and to anticipate what people are going to like and want.
The Girl Scouts’ next stop was with Sheilia Lampe, Iola Area Chamber of Commerce director, where they finished another requirement needed to receive their badge.
