The agony of defeat was not only felt but was quite visible in the halls of Iola Middle School today.
After the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Iola Middle School students challenged rival students at Royster Middle School in Chanute to raise money to send to Haiti. The losers of the fund raiser would have to wear T-shirts from the winners’ school.
Iola students fell $400 short in their effort to better Royster.
To their chagrin, Leann Kennedy, assistant principal, Jack Stanley, principal, and Billie Collins, district paraprofessional, walked the halls today in Royster Middle School colors of red and gray.
Iola students raised $2,154 through a collection of pennies, a dance and raffle of donated items from area merchants. Royster Middle School collected $2,554.
The money will be combined and given to Hospital of Hope. The $4,708 will be used to build a clinic in Haiti.
A plaque at the clinic will note the students’ efforts.
