In this corner: 2011 world “featherweight” rooster boxing champion Milo “Drumsticks” Combs.
Milo, a feathered friend of retired art teacher Steve Orcutt, will appear Saturday at Orcutt’s third annual Full Moon Splash, a back-to-school swimming party for USD 257 elementary school students and their families.
The party kicks off at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Iola Municipal Pool and will feature music, games and pizza for one and all. The festivities are free.
Invariably, even before the last firecracker has popped on the Fourth of July, merchants begin posting “back to school” merchandise.
Those would lead to comments like, “well, kids, your summer vacation is just about over,” Orcutt noted. “It always seemed to me that those words were spoken with more than a little
negativity.”
It’s the wrong line of thinking, he contends.
“We should be excited to be back with our friends and teachers,” Orcutt said. “The summers go by so quickly and it’s so important to associate every summer of our lives with good family
memories.”
As a featured guest of the proceedings, Milo — otherwise known as Iola Register reporter Joe Sneve — will show off his championship belt, greet the children and perhaps lead a raucous chicken dance.
Orcutt hopes to see a large turnout.
“This Full Moon Splash does not mark the end of anything,” Orcutt said. “It’s a great USD 257 beginning. So, come on down. The water’s fine!”
The party marks one of the final chances youngsters will get to use the pool for the 2011 summer session. The pool closes for the season on Sunday.
