Garrett Cleaver, 25, is being sought by Allen County officers on a felony warrant from Neosho County, charging him with involuntary manslaughter from a traffic accident in which a person was killed. Cleaver also is wanted for felony fleeing from Allen County officers and a variety of traffic violations.
Officers attempted to arrest Cleaver at a residence on South Kentucky Street shortly after midnight Monday night before he fled in his pickup truck and led them on a high-speed chase through rural areas that eventually was aborted near Elsmore.
The chase was called off when speeds on the predominantly gravel roads became so high that safety for the public and officers involved became an issue, Undersheriff Bryan Murphy said.
“We know who he is and delaying his arrest won’t put anyone at risk,” Sheriff Tom Williams said. “If it had been a bank robber or someone who we thought might commit a violent crime, we wouldn’t have backed down. But in this case it didn’t make any sense to continue the chase and put innocent people’s lives in jeopardy.”
Murphy described Cleaver’s truck as a black Dodge quad cab with a 30-day license tag. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to call the sheriff’s office, 365-1400.
